Premier League: Corner Kick Trends

Modern managers are laser-focused on perfecting every aspect of the game, and one area that’s gaining a lot of attention lately is corner kicks. Clubs are now actively seeking specialists for set-piece situations, and it’s paying off—many teams are reaping the rewards of their meticulous planning.

Every corner kick is a potential goal-scoring opportunity, and teams are coming up with creative strategies to make the most of these moments. So, which Premier League clubs are seeing the most corner kicks in their matches? Let’s dive into the stats.

Tottenham Hotspur is leading the pack this season by a significant margin, averaging 12.3 corners per match. That’s 4.3 corners more than Manchester City, their closest competitor. In their matches against Leicester, Everton, and Newcastle, Spurs delivered 13, 12, and 12 corners, respectively, totaling 37 corners in just three games. On the flip side, they conceded 14 corners, bringing their average to 17 corners per match—a remarkably high number.

Newcastle United isn’t far behind, also averaging 17 corners per match. Interestingly, while they’ve delivered 19 corners in their first three games, their opponents have earned 32 corners against them. So, while Tottenham is the most aggressive team when it comes to winning corners, Newcastle is the team that’s conceding the most.

On the other end of the spectrum, only six teams are averaging fewer than 10 corners per match this season. Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery, tops this list with just 18 corners across their last three matches—11 taken by them and 7 conceded. That’s the best record in the league so far.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, meanwhile, have the fewest corners to their name, with just 10 in three matches—one fewer than Aston Villa. However, their opponents have been awarded 20 corners against them, highlighting a defensive vulnerability.

Tottenham, Newcastle, Fulham, and Ipswich are the only teams to have earned at least 11 corners in every match they’ve played so far. On the other hand, Aston Villa is the only team that hasn’t had more than 8 corners in any of their games.

Manchester City, known for their dominance in possession, are averaging 8.0 corners per match this season. This is consistent with their performance last season, where they averaged 7.5 corners per game.

One of the most surprising drops comes from Arsenal. Last season, Mikel Arteta’s side averaged 7.0 corners per match, but this season, that number has plummeted to just 4.0.

Liverpool, who delivered the most corners in the Premier League last season with 287 (averaging 8.4 per match), are now averaging 7.0 corners this season.

So, there you have it—a breakdown of corner kick statistics across the Premier League this season. It’s fascinating to see how these numbers reflect each team’s style of play and their focus on set-pieces
