German football is back, and as we’ve come to expect recently, the Bundesliga is once again seeing a high volume of goals. Among Europe’s top leagues, the Bundesliga ranks second in terms of average goals per match.
The most significant spike in statistics has been seen in Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart’s matches. The current German champions have had 5 goals in both of their matches, while Stuttgart’s last match, a 3-3 draw, has been the highest-scoring game of the season so far.
In the matches of these two teams, an average of 5.0 goals has been scored. Following them are Hoffenheim (4.5) and Mainz (4.0).
Heidenheim has scored the most goals without conceding any. The Baden-Württemberg team won 2-0 against St. Pauli in the first round and then defeated Augsburg 4-0.
Surprisingly, Dortmund’s matches have been the least eventful. Nuri Şahin’s team has only scored 2 goals in their two matches, both coming in the first game. Dortmund defeated Frankfurt 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park with goals in the 72nd and 93rd minutes, and then drew 0-0 with Werder Bremen.
Returning teams St. Pauli and Bochum are yet to score a goal, having each conceded 3 goals in their matches.
In matches involving Mainz, Hoffenheim, Leverkusen, and Stuttgart, both teams have managed to score, although they struggle to defend their own goals. Conversely, the only match where no goals were scored was between Werder Bremen and Dortmund.
When relying on Expected Goals (xG) statistics, Leverkusen should have scored the most, but they are 1.66 goals below their expected tally. So far, the "luckiest" team has been Heidenheim, who have scored 1.74 goals more than expected.
Bayern also has issues, but high-level players, led by Vincent Kompany, are helping them out. The record champions have surpassed their expected goals by 1.2, and have conceded 1.05 fewer goals than expected.
Leverkusen is in a contrasting situation, as they are 1.66 goals short of their expected tally, while conceding 1.98 more goals than they should have. It could be said that Alonso’s team has been unlucky or is simply facing problems with finishing their chances.
Last season, Bundesliga matches saw an average of 3.22 goals, and this year, they are slightly behind at 3.11. However, it is expected that this statistic will improve as the season progresses.
